I.T. can be very confusing. When deploying applications in an Oracle environment, there is so much choice on how to build the server and storage infrastructure to support it. Do you go for scale-out, or scale-up? x86 servers, RISC servers, Itanium, UNIX, Windows, Linux? This session will compare the advantages of different approaches, paying most attention to the total cost of ownership and flexibility advantages of a well managed and virtualised scale-up environment. In particular, we will show how reducing the number of instances of operating systems and databases, through consolidation and virtualisation, gives a big payback. We’ll also look a enhancements to HP-UX clustering that dramatically improve the management and availability of Oracle Real Application Clusters. We’ll spend most time looking at HP-UX environments, but also cover some of the benefits for Windows deployments. The session is relevant for everyone from small to the very largest enterprise, from small Blade deployments to large Superdome server configurations.
