Edition-Based Redefinition: Testing Live Application Upgrades (Without Actually Being Live)
Abstract:
If you're using PL/SQL code and patching or upgrading, you'll find that such actions almost always incur necessary downtime. With Oracle 11gR2's edition-based redefinition, re-creating PL/SQL objects is easier since DBAs can access more than one occurrence of such objects, enabling them to stage changes in a schema in production before they are "live". Your backout plan, in case there are any problems with your new upgrade edition, is thus made easier. This presentation introduces this feature.
